Cyberbullying

What is cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is the act of bullying through electronic communication and can be in the form of sending, posting or sharing malicious content about someone.

Top tips to deal with cyberbullying

REPORT

It is important to report anyone who is spreading malicious content online, whether it is directed at you or someone else. This means the bully can be removed from the social media site and the comments can be removed. You can even contact the police if you feel not enough is being done.

SPACE

Taking a break from social media is key when experiencing cyberbullying as it can be very overwhelming. It is best to just put your phone down for a while to escape the negativity and focus on yourself, as well as thinking about how you can overcome the bullies.

BLOCK

Ensure that you block the person harassing you so they can no longer see any of your content or comment any hateful messages. This is an easy, simple way to block out any negativity.

PERSPECTIVE

Changing your perspective. Not many people do this when they are being bullied but it is sometimes crucial to see things from the bully's perspective.  You may ask yourself 'Why are they doing this?' and the answer is probably because they feel insecure about themselves or want to feel powerful but most of the time, they do it for entertainment. So it is important to realise that they most likely don't mean what they say and are going through a tough time of their own.

TELL

Tell someone! Whether it's a friend or family member it is essential that you share your concerns rather than bottling up your feelings. Talking to someone makes these situations much easier to deal with and is better for your mental health. Also, sharing your cyberbullying experiences with others can reassure them that they are not alone and that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

IGNORE

As difficult as it may sound, you have to try your very best to ignore the negative comments. Do not let a bully affect your mental health and try not to retaliate. A bully will often feed off of a reaction so it is best just to ignore them and this way they are more likely to stop.
